Tooth Whitening

Tooth Whitening Treatment in Rochester

Tooth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.  The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically.  Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc.  Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Tooth whitening is not permanent.  A touch-up maybe needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for tooth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

Whitening Options

We currently offer three whitening options to fit your needs and schedule, using the best whitening products available.

In-Office Whitening with Opalescence Whitening Gel

In-office whitening is an effective and safe way to whiten your teeth by multiple shades in a single appointment. Before you get started with your in-office whitening treatment, you should receive a professional dental cleaning to remove plaque and hardened tartar from your teeth. We do this not only because plaque and tartar stain your teeth, but also because your whitening treatment is more effective if your teeth are as clean as possible beforehand.

Once your teeth are clean, your provider will protect the surrounding soft tissue and place the whitening gel on the tooth surfaces. During the hour-long whitening process, you can watch TV or listen to music, or just relax. When your teeth whitening is complete, your teeth will be rinsed, and you’ll be able to head home with your new brighter smile. Some sensitivity after the procedure is normal but will subside in the days following. You can help remedy this with a toothpaste design for sensitivity in the days following your whitening procedure.

At-Home Whitening with Custom Trays and Opalescence Whitening Gel

This type of tooth whitening usually requires two visits.  At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays.

At your second appointment, you will try in the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary.  The trays are worn with special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening.  It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

At-home Whitening with Opalescence GO trays

These trays are pre-formed and contain just the right amount of whitening gel to get your smile camera-ready. Specially designed to fit most arches, you can buy a few or a lot, and are perfect for touch ups.

With any option, you will receive post procedure care instructions for your teeth (and trays for take-home whitening) and be encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
